Community Outreach Update: October 2021

Upcoming activity

Health and Wellbeing:

  • The team are helping Govan Community Project launch their community bike hub on 2nd October 10am-3pm! There will be a stall with resources and the opportunity to cycle our smoothie bike.
  • Bikes for All sign ups continue 2-5pm every 1st, 3rd, 5th Wednesdays of the month at our West hub and 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at our South hub. This subsidised Nextbike memberships are for anyone who is on a low income and lasts 1 year.
  • The team are working with East End Carers, Rowanbank Clinic at New Stobhill Hospital, Govanhill Baths and Govan Community Project on new cycling groups, as well as engaging with lots more folks through the Social Prescribing pilot. They are soon to start a new group with the Clyde College Cardonald Campus too.

Active Travel:

  • The team are training McGill’s management on delivering practical cycling awareness training so they can incorporate it into their regular company training.
  • The Climate Action Group will meet in person on Thursday 21st October at the West hub. The group will continue discussion on designing future community-focused climate events. New attendees are always welcome! Book the Climate Action Group meeting.
  • The team are busy planning led rides and lessons at the recently opened hub at Civic St. If you’d like to volunteer and live locally, please email susan@bikeforgood.org.uk.

Skills and Development:

  • Fix Your Own Bike is on every other Thursday at our South hub and Saturday at our West hub. Use our tools and stands to do quick repairs on your bike, offered on a sliding scale pay basis. Learn more and book Fix Your Own Bike.
  • The team are inviting refugees and asylum seekers to an all-day ride to Lochwinnoch on Saturday 16th October leaving from our West Hub 10:30am-5pm. The route is medium-hard along the national cycling route 7 and requires some level of fitness. Bring food for a picnic beside the lake. Previous Activity

Health and Wellbeing:

  • The team finished sessions with the Phoenix Futures Re-entry Hub. The group will be graduating onto an Essential Cycling Skills course and then a Ride Leader qualification!

Skills and Development:

  • A group from Partick Thistle Charitable Trust joined the team at our West hub refurbishing second hand bikes as part of our Build Your Own Bike course.
  • The team joined the Adventure Syndicate to take 7 women on their first ever bikepacking expedition, camping out in the Kilpatrick hills. Watch their journey in this heartwarming video.
  • The New Scots project team took a group of refugees and asylum seekers on a sunny ride to Mugdock Park to practice mountain biking skills. They also enjoyed a ride to Dams to Darnley including a paddle in the reservoir to cool down!
