New Scots’ Sunny Day Out on the Isle of Bute

On a sunny day in June, 8 refugees and asylum seekers joined us on a fun day out to the Isle of Bute. Our friendly staff members – Chris, Alexis, and Kasia – were leading the way.

The adventure began at Glasgow Central Station, where the group met in the morning. They hopped on a train to Wemyss Bay, enjoying the scenic ride and getting to know each other. Once they got there, they boarded the ferry and made their way to the Victorian seaside town of Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute.

The group of New Scots was diverse, including people from Sudan, The Gambia, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Kenya.

Once on the island, the group split up. Half of the New Scots decided to explore the town by foot, taking in the sights and atmosphere.

The other half took a 10 mile cycle, including a stop at the beach to splash around in the clear water.

For some, the two hour cycle was the longest ride they’d ever taken, but support from the Bike for Good team and the rest of the group made it a great experience. For others, like Sandrine, a professional cyclist who was Rwanda’s first bike mechanic, it was an opportunity to spend time in nature and have a fun day out. Our New Scots Day Trips are open to people of all abilities.

Both groups met up for a classic fish and chips with a view. They all headed back onto the boat with full bellies and smiles on their faces.

Day trips like this are a great way to spend some time cycling in nature, explore Scotland and meet new people.

You don’t need to worry about having a bike or any gear—everything is provided. The trip is completely free and any extras (like the train, ferry and lunch) are paid for too.
