Level 1 City & Guilds Certificate in Cycle Maintenance

City and Guilds is aimed at people with a prior understanding of mechanics with a view to progress. For example; home mechanics, cycle group leaders, outdoor instructors, those in charge of a fleet of bikes or budding shop mechanics.

We understand that people will have different mechanical backgrounds, but an understanding of bikes, how they work and the tools required will help in completing the course.

We deliver the City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate as it is a great basis for a wide range of mechanics. Whether you are looking to progress as a mechanic or consolidate your learning, the Level 1 course is a great benchmark.

Part of the course requires written paperwork.  Please inform us at booking if you require any additional support needs.

Course structure

Over 2 days we will cover:

  • Unit 181 – Repair a cycle puncture
  • Unit 182 – Remove and replace a cycle rim brake assembly
  • Unit 183 – Remove and replace a cycle gear assembly
  • Unit 184 – Carry out a systematic cycle check

We find that a mix of formal tutor-led teaching and informal learner-led discovery works well in terms of increasing understanding.

The course will run from 9.30am – 5pm for two days, with a short lunch break, and tea, coffee and other refreshments available throughout the day. You must attend both full days.

We work in our designated training workshop over 2 days, using our conference room to increase our theoretical knowledge.

We will supply appropriate PPE. All you need is your enthusiasm and a way to record what you have learned.

The course is based at our Glasgow West Community Hub, with great public transport links – buses, subway and train stations within walking distance.  We have plentiful bike parking which is safe and secure. We also have a small amount of customer parking available as well as on street parking (metered).
