Pedal Pathways is a cycling engagement, training and leadership programme, designed for vulnerable women of Glasgow.

What is this project?

The Pedal Pathways project is aimed at creating confidence to cycle for vulnerable women of Glasgow. Courses of 10 weeks are focused on cycle confidence for 8-12 women at a time. Each course is tailored to the participants, and can begin at any level, often for women who have never cycled before.

The project consists of cycle training, sociable group rides, basic bike maintenance classes, social events, wellbeing sessions, and discounted membership to city-wide bike hire scheme nextbike through Bikes For All.

Who can benefit?

This project is solely targeted towards vulnerable women in Glasgow. Benefits of the project will be felt by the entire family of the participant, due to the opportunities created. If childcare is a major barrier to engaging in Pedal Pathways, please let us know.

Why is it necessary?

The majority of women we work with are living on very low income, and some are new to Scotland.  The expense of public transport creates a barrier to key services and opportunities for them to integrate into society. We provide access to a low-cost method of transport, which doubles as an effective form of exercise. We encourage cycling as an excellent way to gain freedom and independence. For women experiencing challenging personal experiences, we are proud to create social cycling networks for them, which has a knock-on effect on improving their mental health.

Impact so far

We have engaged over 200 women so far, making a positive and valuable contribution to their lives. Over 80% of previous participants have noted a significant health improvement since engaging with the project.  Additionally, women have reported they now have feelings of ‘independence’ and ‘freedom’, which they hadn’t felt before. Please watch the following short film to meet some of our Pedal Pathway participants.
