There are countless reasons to consider cycling as a sustainable, accessible, and healthy way to commute to work. Cycling offers a range of benefits for both employees and employers spanning health and wellbeing, productivity, and the environment. There are numerous measures that you as an employer can put in place to encourage cycling and active travel within your organisation, and we are here to support you with that.

Employer benefits

Healthier, more productive staff

Employees who cycle to work are fitter, healthier, happier, and less likely to take sick days. In addition to reducing absenteeism, cycling can also reduce presenteeism. (Public Health Guidance PH13, 2008)

Reduced costs

GlaxoSmithKline found that investing in those willing to give up their cars enabled them as an employer to make an annual saving of £2,000 per car parking space reduced. Expenses can also be reduced when bicycles are used for short business-related day-to-day journeys. (Transport for London, Workplace cycle parking guidance, 2006)

Reduced carbon emissions and congestion

If the journeys made on the National Cycle Network during 2012 had been made by car, the potential CO2 emitted during the year would have been 883,904 tonnes, at a cost of £51.2 million. More cycling = less carbon emissions and traffic jams. (Calculated using standard methodology adapted from DfT’s appraisal guidance (WebTAG3.14.1), using data from the National Travel Survey supplied by ONS)

Attract and retain talent

‘Millennials’ (those born after 1983) will make up 75% of the workforce by 2025. They think that their employer should be doing more to reduce their impact on the environment, particularly in terms of reducing resource scarcity and combating climate change (The Deloitte Millennial Survey 2014).
