UNESCO Chair Refugee Cycle 2019

event date: 29/06/2019

Join Bike For Good on a physical and mental journey around themes of migration, in conjunction with UNESCO, Sustrans, and the British Red Cross.

There is considerable interest in the UK and across Europe in the process of the resettlement and integration of displaced peoples.

Some of these people have ended up in Glasgow, which provides us with a chance to learn from their experience, as well as an opportunity to share our own local knowledge.

We believe that what is good for refugees is good for everyone, which is why we have organised an event to bring refugees, migrants and local communities together for a moment of inter-action.

This guided bicycle ride through the West of Glasgow will start at Bike for Good, cycle via Scotstoun, Knightswood, along the canal, Maryhill, past the Botanics and back to Bike for Good. Estimated duration is 3 hours and we will be cycling on National Cycle Routes (mainly well maintained cycle paths but there will be a small section on quiet roads). Participants will cycle a pre-determined route in small groups, accompanied by experienced ride leaders.

At regular intervals along the route, there will be informative performances and activities by the UNESCO RILA Artists in Residence and our partners. Central themes are (forced) migration, community building and hospitality.

This event is FREE and open to all, but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Basic bike riding skills are needed. For those without a bike, free bikes will be available on site (to be reserved in advance during registration). If you need a children’s bike, please contact us to check availability.

Register now to avoid disappointment as spaces are limited. To book your place, please select your preferred time from the options in the registration menu. You will be able to indicate whether you need to hire a bike during registration. Unfortunately we cannot provide helmets with hired bikes, so please provide your own or there will be an opportunity to purchase one from Bike for Good.

Please remember to bring a drink and snack with you!

Disclaimer: Those taking part in this event do so at their own risk. The UNESCO Chair, the University of Glasgow and all collaborators take no liability for damage to property or injury to persons which may occur during the event.

We hope you can join us!
