The Bike Academy

The Bike Academy is an investment in the lives of young people facing barriers.  We provide opportunities for young people in Glasgow to increase their confidence, self-esteem and skills through cycling related development and training programmes.

Our Bike Academy project started in 2015.  Since then, we have worked with community groups, youth support services, youth groups and schools to reach young people who are not in education, training or employment or are disengaged from traditional education.  We offer young people the opportunity to gain a City and Guilds qualification in Cycle Mechanics, a qualification in Cycle Ride Leading, the chance to participate in led rides and much more!  By offering an alternative learning experience, we aim to develop their soft skills such as team-work, leadership and communication while also increasing both their confidence and employment opportunities.

We have engaged with more than 500 young people over the years enabling over 300 to gain accredited training.  We receive hugely positive feedback from teachers, youth workers, community workers and young people alike – with noted improvements including health, confidence and motivation in the young participants.

This year we are delighted to expand the reach of the Bike Academy:

Through generous funding from The Henry Smith foundation (£178,500 over 3 years) we now have a Skills and Development Officer who provides bespoke training plans and development opportunities for young volunteers, Community Job Scotland employees, Scottish Prison Service placements and school aged work-experience attendees.  We also continue to work with a select number of school groups, delivering our City and Guilds training.  This is a new venture for us and we are excited to see how it grows. If you would like to know more about opportunities for young volunteers, gain work experience or begin a placement, contact Neil

Through a continued partnership with The Venture Trust we currently provide the opportunity for up to 36 young people each year to obtain a City and Guilds qualification whilst completing a Build Your Own Bike course.  These courses run in conjunction with employability training and include a residential element.  The aim of the course is to provide young people with a rounded opportunity to move forward and enter the world of work.  Each 3-week course consists of:

  • bike construction/maintenance including workshop experience
  • employability sessions
  • short wilderness residential (including work-related tasks and biking)
  • qualifications – including City & Guilds, iHASCO online health & safety and First Aid
  • one-to-one support, mentoring and coaching
  • development of an action plan

Thanks to funding form Cashback for Communities (£5020 over a year) we provide after school bike clubs for young people in areas of deprivation, giving them opportunities to access bikes, learn skills and develop their confidence through cycling.
